Finding The After Party

BY JESS ALEXIS It’s Friday night and you’re ready to slip on your converse to make moves in the basement on an off campus house. But, wait! Silver car with red words darted on the vehicle spelling out “Security.” That one off campus house party is over–and so is your Friday night. “I will be pissed off and annoyed at how parties end early,” says freshman Hannah Romney while reminiscing about the nightlife of the school year. Bates, like many other colleges in America, need parties to destress from the hectic week of exams and projects. Yet, security has cracked down, leading to many disappointments and uncertainties for students on the weekend. Although these literal showstoppers can be a bummer on a Lewiston night, many want to know what goes on after.

“Nights just end so early and no one knows what to do we need to start figuring out how to have more fun,” Romney says with a laugh. There is one common destination Batesies seek out–the Den. “Sometimes I would just eat there then find myself hanging in a room usually doing more late night activities” the Freshman says. Even freshman, Angie Kemfack, agrees. “When security comes in and ruins a party I’m just like wow typical Bates. It’s not even 1:30 yet.” After the bust, student’s file along the sidewalk and huddle around street corners finding the next move to keep their night going, but there’s nothing. “It is a bummer because I spent my time getting ready and getting amped with friends then I get let down,” says Kemfack. “I’ve learned to get over it and go to bed instead of sleeping. I will just make myself sick no reason. Another night wasted at Bates.” Before heading out the dorm room and making the walk to White or Frye street, know that silver car will be there before you arrive. Since Batesies understand the result of a party, when will students create the after party?
